In 1834, Chicago was still rough, muddy, and unfinished, but the sound of the town was changing. Wagons, stagecoaches, steamboats, maps, warehouses, land sales, and even a piano signaled something larger: Chicago was no longer merely surviving. It was beginning to organize, move, and make noise.
