A Better Kind of Movie Night in Fulton Market

Fulton Market knows how to do a night out, and Rooftop Cinema Club at The Emily Hotel is leaning all the way in.

Sometimes dinner is not enough. Sometimes the evening needs a little more. A little more skyline, a cocktail, a themed screening, and the satisfaction of feeling like plans were actually made on purpose.

The Rooftop Cinema Club atop the Emily Hotel at 311 North Morgan Street is back! It offers a movie-night setup that feels far more appealing than the usual dark theater and stale carpet situation. Think cushioned Adirondack chairs, double loveseats, wireless headphones, city views, and a lineup that goes beyond the standard blockbuster shuffle.

The real selling point, though, is that this is not just a roof with a screen slapped on it. The programming has some actual personality. The 2026 season opens on Wednesday, May 6, with Love Jones, and the early schedule includes: Con Air, 50 First Dates, La La Land, White Chicks, Pretty Woman, Waiting to Exhale, The Dark Knight, and The Notebook.

Then come the themed nights, which are where this starts sounding a lot more fun than a standard movie outing: a Mother’s Day celebration built around Gilmore Girls episodes, Asian American Pacific Islander Month events, and a Singles Night mixer followed by There’s Something About Mary. That is the kind of detail that makes the whole thing feel more curated and a lot less generic.

And honestly, Chicago could use more of that. Not every night out has to be a major production, but it does help when it feels a little different. Rooftop Cinema Club seems to understand that the movie is only part of the point. Doors open early before every screening, giving guests time to get upstairs, grab a drink, claim a seat, and enjoy the skyline before the opening credits roll. Earlier screenings are family-friendly, while many evening showings are geared toward older crowds, so it can just as easily work for a matinee with the kids as for a date night that requires little effort beyond showing up.

The reviews suggest that the experience delivers on its promise. Guests have praised the atmosphere, the comfort of the seating, the skyline backdrop, and the wireless headphones, which help keep the sound clear without competing with the city below. Several described it as memorable, easygoing, and genuinely fun, whether they came with friends, a date, or family.

While there are several 24-hour garages in the area, The Emily is also just a short walk from the Morgan Green and Pink Line stations, making it easy for guests to skip the parking hassle and arrive relaxed, ready to enjoy an evening under the stars.

Some reviews note that food and drinks can get expensive quickly, and more than one guest mentioned that once the sun goes down, the rooftop can turn chilly fast. In other words, the atmosphere is lovely, but dressing for the weather is a must.

That does not feel like a dealbreaker so much as part of the experience. Bring a layer. Maybe a blanket. Or cuddle a little closer. This is Chicago, after all. The weather likes to make its presence known.

Other ‘need-to-know-before-you-go’ details:

  • Arrive early if seat choice matters. Seating is first-come, first-served.
  • Plan to pay by card because the venue is cashless.
  • Keep an eye on the forecast because the rooftop is fully exposed. Chicago weather has never cared about anyone’s evening plans, and this rooftop is no exception. Check the website for details on weather-related cancellations, screening updates, and ticket transfer options.

With that in mind, the rest of the appeal is easy to see. Rooftop Cinema Club feels like the sort of summer outing people actually get excited about: a little cinematic, a little social, a little indulgent, and much more memorable than another standard night inside. Between the skyline views, the themed nights, and a lineup that swings from nostalgic favorites to newer releases, Fulton Market has one more reason to turn a simple outing into a night out with spark.
